'74 alloy rear hub .

Here is an example of a narrow alloy rear hub to suit the 4 speed motors . They are fairly rare & usually fetch good dollars when they come up for sale. I think that Paul was asking about the one on my bike a while back.

What a laugh. The '75/76 hub does the job just fine and you'd have to be pretty anal to spot the difference. I've had 5 speed hubs on my 4 speed Maicos for years with none of the dramas the Maico forum experts tell you will happen.

They are Paul but not different enough to spend $600 plus on. The '75 hub works fine.

Just bringing this post up again - they were different weren't they? Wider hub w 0.5" more chain offset for the 5sp engine as I recall.

I remember when my 73 steel rear hub failed, we tried to put my mate's 75 5sp alloy hub in but there's no way it would fit in the 73 swingarm. Too wide. And even if it did fit, the chain would have been out of alignment.

How did you make them fit Mark? The pic above looks like the US sports alloy arm. Was it wider to cater for the 75 hub?

The above photo shows the stock swingarm John. I've got a Boys and Stellings alloy swingarm on it now.
To fit the '75 back wheel Imerely jacked it out using a car jack until it fit. Crude? You betcha, but it worked and has been on there (until I fitted the alloy arm) for 20 years with zero problems.

Was the B&S arm any wider?

I didn't have to touch the B&S swingarm, the wheel slipped right on in. It must have come from a bike that used a similar wheel to me.

I wonder if the Maico Only Thor replica swingarms for 74.5 Maicos are the narrow width or for the later hubs. It would make more sense if for the later hubs.

BTW to add to this, a friend of mine here in Texas put 82 wheels on his 77 Aw a few years back. Don't recall what he did specifically( or if he used the 77 or the 82 backing plate), but there was no machining, just moving around spacers..well he may have had Joe make him a spacer, since Joe has a lathe and mill in is shop-along with over 300 vintage and post vintage bikes!! I need to go visit Joe at his house. I will bring beer!! ;D ;D

I temporarily fitted the wheels off my 81 490 to my old squarie while the AW wheels off it were being rebuilt. They bolted right up. Below is a proud Santa seeing posing with the 350 Maico during it's brief period with '81 wheels.
