Photography and VMX

After reading a few posts, it looks like we need a new thread on photography. Some people in here seem to know alot about it and what kind of cameras are good and how to take good pictures. And even the understanding of how a camera works and how to get it to do what you want. I use a nikon camera,(basically your yammie yz of cameras  )

I am no expert(far from it). I just enjoy taking pictures about as much as riding, and hope like hell that I get one good pic once in awhile, just like trying to get on the podium maybe once. Anyway if I can answer a question or help anyone or if any of you good photographers out there can give us some tips or advice that would be great.

Like the saying goes 'one picture is worth a thousand words'.... I guess I'm a long way from 1000 words but a few wise words from some of you guys and we could all be taking better pictures. (now can someone just biuld me my own podium)

so if the Nikon is entry level (Yammie YZ) DJ,   then what do the pro's use that is Equivalent to Honda CR ?

Now that would be cool Graeme(or am I truly blonde and your taking the piss ), I didnt know you are a keen photographer but then I dont know anyone here. I only posted the topic because it seemed to be cropping up in other threads. I'm keen to learn what ever I can to improve my photography, so if any of the guys have tips, or what setting they have their cameras on, like ASA/ISO and if they are using film or digital, SLR's and tips like how the hell ya keep dust out of the camera and even better if they can post some pictures and how they took them. i.e. shutter speed or aperture. (or am I in the wrong forum?) but I just thought that we all like looking at pictures of bikes so who best to ask than bike riders who are into photography or photographers who like VMX.

A separate photography room for VMX would be great!
I've got thousands of photos I've taken at VMX meetings over the past 7 years.
Having a forum to talk to other photography tragics with VMX interests would be good.

I have mostly Nikon gear, used film for years, and was only interested in digital cameras if I could use all my old Nikon AF lenses.
I got my wish with a Nikon D70, which wasn't cheap, but I love it! One 4GB memory card can hold about 1,000 photos. Thats about 30 films at about $7.00 each plus developing and printing, much cheaper and much more fun...

I'll post some photos later.

 I use the D70 as will. Years ago I had a Nikon F3 with the motordrive and I loved that camera but I sold it and didnt have a camera for years, and then I tryed a digital camera, but couldnt come to terms with the delay times with the shutter release. But the D70 is a bit more like what I have been use too.

all good stuff.  i'm a photography dilettante in terms of skills, with semi-decent camera, and would love to improve my action photography.  camera is a panasonic fz5, which packs a lot of features in to a compact digi frame - now need to work out how to use all them features to good effect.  i get a real buzz out of taking it along to race meets and snapping away (sorry - framing some good shots) - but find the biggest barrier to doing more is the need to retreat to the armchair in between races to recover!

like fishing, there's always 'one that got away' stories for pics.  at cooma amcross recently, i found myself alone without camera up the very top of the course after a detour to the portaloos.  the spot gave a great visual line downhill, thru a sweet couple of 4th gear grasstrack sweepers.  and along came the a-graders led by mal cash thru them.  for five laps i stood there open mouthed watching the feast of cashy tapped out on his crf450 wfo thru that two hundred metre stretch of sweepers, up to the 180 degree bend i stood at the top of, followed by the hundry horde of a-graders desperately in pursuit.  beeeautiful - but empty handed!!  come back down to the pits but what can you say to your mates without the proof?
