RM465 clutch questions
« on: March 24, 2011, 03:48:12 PM »
Hi all,

I am just getting into the restoration 'addiction' and have started my first project on a recently purchased 'new' toy I received from the US which has turned out to be a bit less than the prime example of an RM that the seller made out! I was told that there wasn't much more to do and was going to Heaven on the weekend but once I got it it was obvious that Heaven will need to wait. At every turn something needs doing, falls off or leaks. Not to mention 30 years of grit and grime.

I have been working on the rolling chassis and whilst waiting for powdercoating and other parts, thought I would start on the engine, enough intro....

Q1-  The clutch basket has some perfectly formed indents (< 1mm) on one side of each finger caused by the friction plate , this is obviously wear but is that likely to cause major dramas down the track. I have started the bike when I first took delivery but have not had a chance for any real riding on it.

Q2- If it is likely to cause grief any tips on sourcing a new clutch basket new or in better condition

Q3- Are there are any suppliers locally that I can source a set of friction plates from? I have sourced some various parts from Vintage Suzuki, Alpha sports and Bike bandit in the past few weeks but the cheapest price I can get for a set of 8 plates & springs plus freight is $250 which seems exorbitant. Happy to get aftermarket versions

Thanks in advance as there may be a few questions coming through in the next few weeks / months!

Bitten

Gday Bitten, the good news with your resto project is RM 465 parts are in plentiful supply on Evil Bay.
I reckon a clutch kit such as below will do.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzuki-RM465-RM-465-EBC-Clutch-Plates-81-82-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27b898efe0QQitemZ170600755168QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
New clutch baskets (NOS) might be a struggle,I would try Evilbay for a good second hand one.
Good luck with your resto mate.

G'day Bitten, the clutch hub wear is pretty normal and long term the biggest issue you will face is the clutch may become a little 'grabby'. You could file most of the indents out and this will help smooth the take up when being released. < 1mm isn't what I'd consider bad ;) the clutch friction plates of which there are 8 are the same as listed below. Ebay is the place to get them cheap. I recently scored a couple of sets from Borneo for my TM/RM125's (7 plates in each) for a mere $12 a set and $8 postage. I highly doubt you will find anything cheap locally as genuine list price is around $18 per plate ;) Cheers
