They weld sprockets to countershafts for the same reason that they welded a kickstarter to one of my bikes-BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOSES...

My 250 had the sproket welded >:(.  They were so keen to get it to stay on that the weld had burnt through part of the shaft - it was obviously buggered.  They had also welded the rear brake actuator arm to the shaft.  Very close to the Magnesuim backing plate  :o
Looking for YZ250C parts NOS if possible

The only triple jumps he would have been doing are the hop, skip & jump.

Allright apart from being gooses which is excusable, why dont people say the kicker or the gearlever has been welded, -would stop a bit of the hard feelings towards the gooses when they are selling a bike. Its just bad manners

I recently got hold of a motor where they had not only welded on the gear lever and countershaft sproket nut, but when I got the clutch cover off (no welded on kick starter though), they had also put a small tack on the primary drive nut to stop it from coming loose. My guess is they couldn't work out what the wave-washer did.
These guys fitting skills are non existant so we shouldn't blame them for their ignorance, a hammer, shifting spanner and a welder are their usual tools of trade. Look on the bright side, the bikes these guys operate on are often ones that stop running from other means too complicated for them to figure so they either go into the shed for a few years hibernation or place them on ebay saying 'doesn't run' where they end up go for a song to someone who knows better. A simple once over is often all that's needed to get them going again.

I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.
