I know someone who ended up in a very similar predictiment. The differences were 1/ the bike was a police 650 Triumph (a.k.a. Saint) and it was saved by the panniers and 2/ the solid looking ground he was taking as short cut was the runoff from a pig farm
It caused quite a stink
