sand / soda blaster

im thinking of getting a two bob sandblaster for ~300 bucks or so...anyone tried one??? ive got a few jobs...trailer, landcruiser chassis and a fergy to do as well as lots of little clean ups. looking at "farsands"to get it done outside

Haven't used that type but biggest thing with any sandblasting is the type of sand used, most use garnet for good result also the blaster is only as good as the compressor used. The supplier will let you know how many CFM is required.

sort of, there is a 100 litre one i saw on ebay for 299 or 399 which would be much better in terms of bigger jobs

There are people who do on site water blasting. Makes a big mesh on the ground but no dust.

The bigger version would be good for doing what you want if you can supply enough air. I'd think you would be getting into the diesel powered compressor at that size. You would go through a lot of sand as well, years ago I found a place that would sell it in bulk and I turned up with a 200 litre drum with the top cut out and bought some.

i can get sand / garnet etc from a mate who is a sandblaster...i cant get mates rates etc for blasting. so for the price of the unit and a heap of media, 1 of my jobs would be done +( transport to and from) so i figure its worth the hassle. another bloke who owes me a favour has a few mobile compressors so i think thats covered + i am keen to get the hang of it.

My Old boss would always collect the used garnet and the more used stuff was for fine Jobs later on.
We'd have test panels too, just to be sure.. big Jobs we'd be running 120psi it was hard work...I recently got a frame back from a powder coat mob with a nice hole burnt through it..hopless attention to detail.

Go for it you will save money but it's a very dirty job. The big rigs come with pressurized helmets so your not breathing in the dust and you need to completely cover the body as even the sand bouncing of the job hurts let alone a direct hit which removes flesh.

its a dirty job all right..i plan to do it over a big tarp and screen the stuff out for reuse. i dont even want to think about the possibility of sand injected under the skin

I have a smallish cabinet at my factory,powered by a largish compressor.  I run garrnet for though jobs and glass beads for finer stuff.

I wouldn't be without one.  Do all my own stuff, except for large items like frames at.

Just do it.
