Uni universal foam filter pod on dirt bikes???
« on: August 23, 2016, 04:35:21 pm »
Hi all,
I got a bit confuse here.....my 85 kx125 is got a strange air box design and i want to remove that air box and put a uni foam pod on the bike.....i have never try this before so i don't have any idea. Will this really work like a normal dirt bike filter with an air box surrounding???

You mean remove the airbox completely and fit a pod filter? will be dirty before you even get to unload it from the trailer, need a box to shield the crap thrown up around it.

Yeah that's it....just got a bit sick of that left hand side air box. I'm also getting a outer cover for the pod

Don't do it would be my advice.

There's a good reason why most vehicles have an airbox. Not only does it keep free flowing dust from getting to the filter, It also keeps positive air around the filter AND helps stop mud and water from drowning the filter and stopping you in your tracks.

Other than that, pod filters have a nasty habit of falling off when you least expect it!
Arrogance.....A way of life for the those that having nothing further to learn.

The purpose of the airbox is..

A) Deflect large particles that could harm the engine and clog air filter
B) Reduce induction noise
C) Provide a still air chamber.

if they didnt work do you think factories would bother putting them on bikes?

if you dont like the stock one why not make a different one but do put an airbox on  and run the pod inside it.

Airbox all the way.
The 84-85 KX125 airbox isn't really a hassle - slightly annoying carb access is its only real failing. They're not restrictive, the filter is easy to access, you can see if the filter is seated, blah blah.

I've run bikes without airboxes in the past. It's not a total disaster, but they hate water, the filter gets dirty ridiculously quickly, and it usually costs power... Not sure where the wins are...
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Common on dirt track, not unheard of for MX back in the day.

I ran one on my methonol burning YZ80D. (Trying to keep up with the new "E" model. In 1978)

I'm replacing the old carby with the new mikuni one at the moment....i was going to put a flat slide TMX35 on it but it's got a LH idle and mixture screws which it's pain in the arse....the idle screw is touching the airbox and i don't have any solution to sort this out..never mind now...i'm just going to stick with the VM round slide
