What have i brought
« on: August 24, 2016, 07:09:15 pm »
Hi KTM Fanactics
I am new to this site and forum , i have had  owned and sold a few vintage bikes ie IT465,CR 500, etc.But recently i seen the light and purchased a vintage KTM. I have had KTMS before but newer models.I purchased sight unseen what i was told to be a KTM 350 1981 Model ?The bike was owned by the previous owner for only one year , he told me the motor had been rebuilt by the owner he brought the bike from and was in good condition.
Upon arrival the bike had been reasonably restored, the motor has good compression and starts and goes good, the plastics may need replacing , the frame has been powder coated, new rims and tyres. Overall the bike is what i expected for the price i paid. The problem i have is i am confused in what model this bike is.
The Frame Number is 204-3310
Engine Number 1-5605176A
From what i have read and found so far , All i know is the bike is a 1982 model !
So any  help would be much appreciated.
Cheers Wayne

Check the time dial on the crankcase, should be near output sprocket.
That will indicate the motor.

nice bike. I vaguely remember riding one and thinking how good the power was and why wasn't 350 -400 the premier class.
now i have a husky 400 and its a premium engine!

Here are some manuals to help you on your KTM adventure....

Single shock was released for 1982, but they continued to make a few twin shock versions. Maybe to use surplus parts... who knows?

You cannot use a date dial on an early KTM engine to tell the date of the model. It is a casting date, it may be close.

As you will see from the manual, the same bottom end was used from 350/390/420/495 (except gear ratios differ depending on the model).
Also note differences in the chassis' in the transition from 1980 into 1981,hence 82 twinshock. Stem length etc etc, Different length swingarms depending on models etc.

Hi Adrian
Thanks for the info and the manuals, it is a twin shock with Ohlins  with the reservoir, not the piggybacks. Did only the MC models come out with the piggybacks , also did the GS models come out with Bilstein shocks??

Some KTM's had different shocks for different markets.  Ohlins were also sold as an aftermarket fitment as well.

Do you have a photo of this model? I am on Google but cant even find a correct photo of this model yet.
