Were are all the YZ 490's
« on: April 20, 2016, 02:14:08 pm »
I see 490's for sale regularly. I see there pic's posted on face book but I don't see them at the race track, see lots of CR's etc. Why do they hide in the shed?

I thought it was because they never sold that many in the first place.

Imagine it's 1987, and you're in the market for a new big bore MXer... Yeah, the 490 would be your last choice, just like it was for actual buyer in 1987 (and pretty much every year they made the YZ490).
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

I think most of them must be over here in the UK, even though they received damming test reports back in the day from various magazines, riders still seem to like them. You see a good turn out at most vintage Evo race meets, guys are now spending a lot of time & money on sorting out the suspension & motor problems they came with. Check out the gallery page at www.classicdirtbikerider.com & you will see what I mean, I wrote quite a long article on the history of the Yamaha YZ490, you can find it on the features page of the above website. I think UK Evo riders & restorers are beginning to like them even more now because they are still plenty fast enough & have the advantage of not having things like a power valve or liquid cooling system to worry about plus they are far cheaper to buy than a CR or KX500. All the best, Mr J
