twin-plug head
« on: December 03, 2015, 10:42:57 am »
I want to fit a twin-plug hi-comp head to my 84 495. I know the coil is different, but are the rest of the electrics the same, like stator and flywheel?
cheers.

Do you have the 84 replacement hi-comp head or a head from a previous year?
The base of the head is different from the previous years so there will be issues sealing on the barrel

'84 is touted as the lowest horse power 495 but they are hell rideable. Perfect (for me anyway) smooth, easy to manage power. Still a big bore 2t by any stretch of the imagination but one just about anyone could ride without fear. I'd leave it alone & enjoy it as it is.

I have a twin plug head already, just thought it might be fun to chuck it on. but if it wont fit it wont fit!  I know it will have more than i will ever need anyway, but you have to muck around sometimes. :)

Pretty sure it will fit but at the risk of turning the bike you trust into one which may bite you. I had a go on an '81 495, was unreal in a straight line for 5 minutes. That was enough though.

Don't know Hoony, haven't seen a 495 in Viper for years now. One guy who worked for me raced a 390 5 or 6 years ago & Poof boy was a sponsored rider on my '84 495 about 3 years ago. Not many Kato's at all in VIPER for a long tome now.

There was a high compression single plug head , mostly in the states you could try and source.
For me ( and I have ridden 495's since they were new) If you going to build a race bike spend your money on the crank and get it balanced , get the right pipe/carby combo for you. I go for mellow. 38mm bing and a good long header.

Thanks Slakewell. this bike was a basket case for a long time, slowly bringing it back to life. It had been re-sleeved back to standard by the previous owner. I am trying to source a new std piston kit if anyone has one. I know i can source an oversize kit but i dont want to bore out a good cyl. The pipe is ok but i will try and source a better one eventually. And a muffler.... :)
