New guy to this VMX caper from Kobble creek near Brisbane
« on: December 24, 2015, 08:13:51 pm »
HI Everyone, and merry Christmas.  :D

Ive joined the group to hopefully buy a bike my son and i can have fun with.  We have been riding dirtbikes for years and would like to get into the old machines and maybe do some racing, as mostly it looks fun!  You see when i was young enough to contemplate mx I only finished one race where I was a resounding last on my 85 cr250!  So i went trailriding after that!  So a couple (or so) decades on and now im over 50, and i still expect to be at the rear of the field but my son and i can share the riding and tinker with it in the shed.

When i was a kid in the seventies i always wanted a dirt bike sooooo much and used to drool over some honda elsinore brochures my much older brother had brought home from shopping for his first bike. But i never had the money and parents then did not drive kids around to riding areas.   So anyway thought id get one of those cr250m's!  Now ive learnt that you cant buy a usable one of those for 3 grand!  So i'd be happy to find a RM250/370 76 to 78, if any of you that have one would like to sell!  Thanks for reading,  Peter.

Welcome.

I'm no expert, but do some research on the models you're considering before purchase.
Consider:- known problems, parts availability, class eligibility/competitiveness (if this concerns you.)
I personally consider sentimentality a big factor.
I bought a 1981 RM125X as I raced one in 1981. Not the most competitive bike in Pre '85, but I don't mind. (I'm not the most competitive rider, in any class! :))
Plenty of expertise on this site.

Whether you have a bike or not, try and make "Classsic Dirt", June 11/12, at Conondale (West of Malany, Sunshine Coast). A great non competitive vintage weekend.

Hey mate, another local! I'm at Samsonvale, and there's a few more vmx'ers around Samford.

I may know of a 250c2 for sale? I'll let you know.

While subtle, the comment "..my first VMX bike..." is illuminating. :)

Just today, I found myself justifying it this way. "Old bikes break a lot, so you need to take more than one to the track..."

The scary thing is I was mainly justifying a second VMX bike to myself...

I only do vinduro events because I'm a crap rider, but I nearly always take a spare and a guest bike to an event.
