Air filter cage
« on: May 20, 2015, 08:27:43 pm »
Hi, has anyone made an air filter cage ? I'm after one for a rm 370 but not having much luck at the moment. So I'm thinking of making one. if anyone has made one before I'm pretty interested in knowing where to find the perforated sheet and how you went about knocking one up.

I made a chook cage once Phil. Wasn't much good though, the foxes got them all on the first night.  ::)

I hope then you are a better sheet rocker than a chook hut builder .

You don't need mesh, just make the cage out of stainless wire and the end piece out of alloy plate, I got a heap of A5 Kawi ones made up to the original dimensions, I'll check the sizing against a 370 one and see how close it is. Have you looked under PE250B/C and RM250A/B/C or RM400C?.....all the same :)

Yes wire would be better than mesh.
Perf metal would have airflow restriction, 'free area' varies with types of perf but would mostly be around the 50-60% free area which would be quite restrictive compared to a wire frame
I imagine 2.5mm wire would work best

Davey wod you have a photo of the cage made of wire ?
This would give me an idea of how to go about fabricating the cage. Cheers Phil

The RM cage is a short cylinder made of perforated steel with formed ends turned in as flanges to positively clamp the filter.

I was lucky enough to pick up a NOS cage for ten buck at Broadford Bonanza but was going to make a cage for a spare change over  filter.

I reckon you could make a passable item from some mouse mesh netting - 6 mm squares- with some soft tube to make the ends.

The other way would be to have the perf laser cut leaving a strip of plain at each end to form the slight shape needed. Perf dia. pitch pattern is 8mm  on 10 staggered. Gauge is .5 mm.

The filters are available from Suzuki and they may even have the cages.

Thanks for the photo Momus, I have a cage for a rm 250b pretty sure they are the same item. Having trouble tracking one down so I thought why not just make one, that's the line I'm taking at the moment.

I have an extra cage sitting in my garage.

I came across an RM370 airbox that had a filter in it recently.

I am in Sw Missouri USA, I have no idea about postage etc, but I am willing to give you the part for the postage.

Let me know if you are interested.
