I did this upgrade recently on an '88 XR100 for a good improvement.

Recommended for easier starting and overall cleaner running.

Coil and CDI box mounting will require a bit of attention but worth the effort. The XR100 CDI is substantially the same though you must use an XR80 stator plate- for reasons known only to Honda they use a 2 screw setup on the 80 and 3 on the 100.
If you love it, lube it.

nothing wrong with a good old points system [call me old fashioned or behind the times], not something like a broken valve spring or rings or blocked exhaust--had an old weedeater given to me that the exhaust was 'totaly' blocked at the outlet by a 'mason bee' nest. Anyway, only coming up with ideas as think you say you've not been inside the motor yet. Hope i read that right. worn out cam!!--had a tt250 with an all but totaly circular inlet lobe, ran but barely, & was quiet as back of the lobe was perfect where clearance is set. Goodluck.

Have fully inspected the insides all good ,have some damage on mag coils from previous owners, that ,s why I'm thinking of swap.

Have found that you can't unless you play around with different size keys . between 84 and 92 model bikes 92 has large keyway..

I filed a large key where needed to suit the early crank. Make it a tap in fit.
If you love it, lube it.
