Dickie Knee
« on: February 26, 2015, 10:26:07 pm »

Not that one, the one that hurts a bit.

Lately my poor old man knees are giving me grief, particularly the left one that i ground all the extra bits off when i was a kid. i almost made it around that wet corner at full tilt. Must have been diesel on the road. :o

Anyway the extra weight of holding the cycle seems to be stressing the ligaments and muscles a bit more than is comfortable and i find myself shying away from dropping a foot in a corner or even standing on the pegs some days. Thats not a bad thing if im on the road but off road it can be a bit of an eye widener amongst other things.

Im fairly sure Im not the only one who has dodgy knees  in my age bracket (over 21s)  so im wondering how do you guys deal with it besides shares in Voltarin ?

I broke my knee when i was 13 on the doggy framed YZ80E.  It has always played me up but i have always run on it and the exercise helps.  I also take super strength krill tablets everyday and have done for years.
Keys to the race:
Good knee braces.
Regular exercise.
Good bike.
Fish oil.
Light weight, quality boots.
Keep foot high in corners.
Deep heat/Voltarin/Panadol
Luck.

2 Dickie Knees and a stuffed left ankle meant a change in my riding style. (not to mention day to day moving!) Especially on my vintage bikes where I don't have as much room to move around and the transition from sitting to standing is more cramped. These days I find myself keeping my feet on the pegs a lot more and once I stand I don't want to sit back down. I use the sport braces (elastic) for my knees under my knee guards and put voltarin or similar on first. Walking around as much as I can before I get on the bike is good to warm the ligaments up. I have to wear Tech 10 alpine stars for my ankle as they are alot tighter around my ankle with the inner bootie and I feel the extra rigidity helps, especially if I HAVE to do a foot plant. Other than that, suck it up, take the pain and enjoy the ride. It only hurts after the racings done  ::)
Arrogance.....A way of life for the those that having nothing further to learn.

Bugger. I was hoping for a brilliant solution .

Im already buttering my knee twice a day with Voltarin and dont go out the door without my stretchy blue knee thingy,
I have started to slide off the seat a bit more and that seems to save pressure on the knee as i can keep it a bit bent rather than having the force directly on the joint. Its not perfect but at least i can still walk in the afternoon after a full days riding.

cheers guys

Pokey, give Stephen Gall a ring, he has custom made braces and knows a lot about "dickie knee's".....there not cheap but way cheaper than a knee reconstruction, google Gall Bros Medical.....get advice from a Pro. I have the top of the line CTI carbon braces and wouldn't ride without them....2K cost .....knee reco = 10K. No jarring when you stab your foot on the ground.....do your body a favour.
QVMX.....Australia's #1 VMX club......leading the way.

The one time I did NOT wear my Thor knee braces (in my smaller race boot)  I hit the deck hard and the Jawa's steel fuel tank smashed my knee into the ground side on. It crushed the meniscus somewhat.
Would have been at very least cushioned well by these guards, they have had big hits and crashes before and no probs with knee damage - till now.
Favouring my sore knee caused damage to the 'good' knee so both a bit poor in the joint now although, time, resting, and condroitin and creams seems to be helping.

I had an ACL done on my left knee at age 56. Specialist said I could get away without having it done but there was a good possibility of the knee degenerating fairly quickly. He also said there are not that many people at 56 that have knee recos. Thought it was best to get it done. Hardest thing is the time after recovery trying to get the strength into the knee. Now have slight kneecap problems because my vastis medialis?? muscle has no strength. My fault. Had another MRI and knee still is in good condition. My advice is go and see a doc who has a good reputation as a sports doc and get him to check it (them) out. MRIs can be expensive but I guess they give the experts the best chance of a correct diagnosis.
