Suzuki PE175C fork seals
« on: October 11, 2014, 07:55:06 pm »
hi guys, mate and I are going to attempt changing fork seals on 1978 PE175, does anyone know what Allen key or socket is needed to seperate the inner and outer forks? Anything tricky for the naive newbies to watch out for? Oh and what grade fork oil, just be vinduro, no VMX or jumping and light riders about 70kg

the biggest trick is not pulling the springs out until you have cracked the allen key underneath loose. Unless you have access to a rattle gun or the special tool to stop the damper rod turning, I leave the springs in and then fit up the allen key and give it a good whack to crack the seal and undo it. to slip off the slider with the springs in place, you need to have the front end way off the ground so you can slip the sliders off the legs and over the damper rods.

Once the slider is off, clean it up  and carefully remove any spring clips or circlips holding the seals in before carefully prising the seals out taking care not to damage the top edge of the sliders trying to lever the seals out. Clean out the sliders with a long rod and cloth to remove any sludge.

put a little oil inside the new seals before slipping the forks back together. pull the springs out now and push the sliders right up before tightening up the allen key to centre the damper rods in the sliders.

Use ATF or a mix of 5 and 10 wt oil to give about 7.5 wt for a good mix between plush and controllable action.

Use a heat gun to remove oil seals .... heaps easier with no damage to alloy casing.
