To Montesa or not to Montesa
« on: October 09, 2014, 07:51:46 pm »
My brother in law has stumbled across 3 x Montesa's (125,250,360) in various states of repair / disrepair. They appear to be 90% complete... Missing parts appear to be generic only.... Grips, clutch levers, cables etc....plastics look really good - still have stickers, seat looks new.  Current owner has ridden all of these at some point and the expectation would be that they can be resurrected without too much heartache.

Age unconfirmed, but around mid 80's.

Question is what would the Montesa gurus advise in terms of taking these on as projects / parts availability, racing them in the VMX series (South East Queensland - Australia), and resale.

Appreciate any feedback.

Retiring ... all bikes and parts must go.....  1984 KX250's (2 off) and Resto Project 1983 KX125's (3 off)

PM for details

Late 70's Monty 125 is all Iv'e seen in the flesh. For me a very much love hate relationship. Love how look and feel but hate pushing it back to the pits after it's blown yet another rod.

Current bikes. KTM MC 250 77 Husky CR 360 77, Husky 82 420 Auto Bitsa XR 200 project. Dont need a pickle just need to ride my motorcickle

Last MXers 1981 VG models.

The H7 250/360s continued in production to around 1986. Last all Montesa trials bike was 1989/90 model. Honda engines from then on.

The only 360 after 1978 was the H6/H7 enduros.

Agree that the 125s are pretty bikes but the engines are hand grenades as the crank was still basically the same as the 1971/72 Cota 123 trials bike :o. Lyall O'Brien replaced the rods, big end and pin with some other brand, Yamaha we suspect.

What CR rod ? I did look at this at one time. The stroke was much shorter on the early CR's. The tiny transfers ports was the other problem.

Yes sorry mate I meant rm125 04 rod tried cr125 6mm to short you need to get a stepped big end pin made as its 2mm bigger bore and either use jap piston or bore your piston 1mm as the RM is 19mm little end not 18mm like the Monty I think a ktm125 rod would also work
