Mikuni 36mm Carby on a PE175?

Wondering if anyone has put a PE250 carby (VM36) on a PE175?

Saw a post online of someone that did and got a pretty decent top end hit but I'm worried about killing the bottom.

My bike is stock but I'm wanting to wake it up a little.

Slightly confused as my engine/frame number are 108+ indicating a 79 model PE175N which should have the VM34 carby but actual carb specs ie main jet, jet needle etc match the VM32 specs on http://www.mikunioz.com/jetting_specs.htm

Anyhow I need to a.) dump the 32 for a 34 or possibly a 36.

Any feedback appreciated.

I have a 34 on a RM 125 and also an IT 200

I would think 36 would be too big.

I think a 36 would work ok, "lose bottom end"? Only if you open the throttle too far at low rpm, most people that know how to ride feed the right amount of throttle for the given rpm, I'd go for it.

 Pe 175 C        models = VM32 SS
 Pe 175 N-T-X  models = VM34 SS
 Pe 400                       = VM36 SS

By putting a 36 on your 175 will do nothing for it, stay with what the factory recommended and jet it right  with correct float level and new reeds set at 9mm ( check to see if rubber seat is ok )  .

The 175  like plenty  revs so don't be afraid to make it sing while getting RSI in your left foot changing gears.

LOL .. this from the man that told me to not rev the crap out of mine on the weekend, instead, short shift it and make it pull ... hahaha you're a funny bugger Stewart.  But I must admit, after I got the jetting sorted, it pulled like a 14 year old and was a blast to ride.

Personally I'd leave it alone if you were going to vinduro it .. but if you're flat tracking it them port the shit out of it, redo the squish, and go for a 38 or 40 on methanol

But seriously, there is probably a lot more performance to be gained from putting a decent expansion chamber and muffler on it and then jetting it accordingly.

Yes a bigger carb will give you more on the top but you lose the bottom end. You have a specific carb on your bike for a reason and someone got paid to choose the right one . Read the manual and it will explain why the size,  how it works and how to set your carb up

Anyone have the standard carb settings for the VM34 on a PE175? The one I'm getting is jetted as follows:

#260 Main Jet
#35 Pilot Jet
#159 Q-2 Needle Jet
#6DH4 needle

Personally I doubt you need it. Drew Smith (the ex ISDT and PE god) ran one briefly I believe, but are we in that league?

every manual, every brochure, every magazine article, etc.

depending on where your PE came from, the jetting did vary and after 30 years, who knows what some earlier owner did to the thing...
