Hey Jim,

Your problem is quite common.

The oil tank on an XT/TT is in the frame and above the motor so don’t worry about that. It really needs to be higher to feed a good supply of oil to the engine.

In the clutch cover is a spring loaded ball and rubber seat. It’s there to stop the oil running from the tank into the sump. When the motor starts the oil pressure opens the valve.

The rubber seats do harden and perish. It’s a couple of hours work to change it and the seat and ball cost about $10.00, you’ll also need a clutch cover gasket.

Hope this helps

No dial indicator Jim, you can get it close enough to run on the timing marks than a timng light to finalise it

Jim if it is timed OK now ,how about the old couple of scratches with a scriber to align back too on reassembly method? ;) then timing light if needed. Brent is spot on with the problem and fix sorry I was a bit slow. LOVELY HAGON MMMMM :) Tim
I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

g/day are you sure  it is really over filling the crank case, they normally leave a lot of oil there. my elstar mounted xt 500 was pumping oil straight out the exhaust pipe which i thought was caused by to much oil laying in the crank case but no! the cause was it had a cast iron oil ring which can not cope with the quantity of oil being splashed around.the fix was a steel segmental oil ring.cheers wally,
dont follow me i'm probably off line!
