Magnesium welder needed
« on: July 13, 2008, 08:02:38 pm »
Hi all,
Does anyone know of a really quality welder (in Sydney) who does a good job with magnesium.  My son's bicycle has a fine hairline crack that I'd like to get fixed before it falls apart and tosses him down the road.  It's pretty thin-walled tubing, so it needs someone with a bit of finesse.
Thanks,

Martin :)

I'm not aware of any Magnesium frames for bicycles. They would be too brittle. I think you will find that the frame would probably be 6061 T6 or 7075 T6 alloy.
You need to find a good TIG welder & technically the frame will need to be heat treated back to T6 after welding as the weld area will loose a bit of strength.

The frame is a MERIDA Road Racing 905 and it's got "magnesium" written all over it and warnings about touching up any scratches etc.  Merida are pretty famous for their magnesium frames and cracking isn't unheard of.  I guess it is some kind of magnesium/aluminum alloy or something.

I had Ian Lovell from Servalloy in Ingleburn weld up some magneium alloy Marzocchi forks a few years ago, but Servalloy seems to have disappeared.   Any other ideas ?
Thanks again,
Martin
