YZ400D axle stuck in fork leg - how to get it out?
« on: June 01, 2008, 12:19:34 pm »
The axle, wheel and one fork leg won't come apart.
Have tried soaking in wd40.
Can I get them apart without damaging anything?
If I have to destroy the axle are they easy to come by?

when this happens it usually is the spacer between the wheelbearings that rusts to the axle.or the brake backing plate.
if you have the axle nut off and one fork leg then you may be able to heat the hub with a heat gun and whack the hub with a piece of wood to try and force the wheel off leaving the middle spacer and one wheel bearing still on the axle which can the be removed by heating with an oxy set.

If you have access to a large press, then you could slide the fork/wheel assy out of the clamps and press the axle out.

It is worse that that. The axle is threaded into the fork leg. The axle threads are stuck in the fork legs threads.

Looks to me like a little bit of heat may be the answer. Gently heat the fork leg with a torch around the lug where the thread is. With aluminium having a higher coefficient of expansion than steel, the corrosive bond will let go. After the heat is applied try and break the bond by trying to turn the axle, once it breaks loose, apply some WD40 or similar and work the axle until she starts to rotate and unscrew.
