Pre-'78 Maico forks ID and steering stem removal
« on: August 17, 2013, 12:28:58 am »
Hi All
I have a pair of pre-'78 Maico forks: 38mm dia, with internal springs that have been earmarked for use on a similar period MX special.  How can I tell the actual year that they were made?
Secondly, I need to remove the steering stem so that I can fit a different stem. How do I go about this?  I see that the online parts fiche shows a separate stem and retaining ring. Does the stem just press out downwards through the bottom yoke?

Thanks in advance
David

Hi Paul
Thanks for the info. I'll strip the yokes and while I'm at it, will measure the fork travel. I think it's about 9" which is about right for a '77.
Regards
David

Hi David. 76AW is 8.7"and the 77 is stated as 9.5" total travel.

Those figures will vary slightly, depending on which guage of rebound springs have been used Cheers.

"light weight, and it works great"  :)
