Suzuki ignition coil question
« on: August 10, 2013, 04:13:05 pm »
I'd like to know if I can use a generic aftermarket CDI coil that's made as a Yamaha replacement on my TM400? The TM400 Suzuki CDI coil is twice the size of the Yamaha item a fraction of the price for a new one.

                                                                    Genuine NOS TM400 Suzuki coil....new price $250

I'm running a Chinese pit bike coil on my TM 125 and it runs fine, probably better than the 30+ year old original
The older I get, the faster I was

Can't see why not, has always surprised me just how bulky the Suzuki coils are, the RD400 twinplug coil I use in my CZ is quite a bit narrower than the TS185 coil I could have used if I chose to run a single plug

Mark ...I ran one of those on my Tm 250 for a year ( 18 races ) with no problems .
Doesn't quite fit into Suzuki frame bracket  ;)

Thanks boys, I guess the best way to know is to try it. I can't believe how expensive a NOS Suzuki coil is....I've got a little stash of different NOS CDI coils I'll try 'em and see what works best. I'm not all that worried about the frame bracket Stuart, it's my Boyd and Stellings frame and it's got a bracket with a number of different mounting points, obviously for just the situation I'm asking about. I was getting the bike ready for the Nats so it looks like I can relax a little on the job now :'(
