Hip Replacement

Looking like a hip replacement coming up, anyone had one and can you ride afterwards

Ken, yes I had a new left hip about 3 months ago, I was walking in days! and riding in 6 weeks.  What type has your surgeon suggested?  I had a 'Birmingham', for anyone that rides I suggest this type.

Old school hip replacements use to replace the femural head (the top neck of the femur) with a spike about 6" down the inside of femur, for riding this causes a point at the end of the spike where the leg could break in a crash; causing all sorts of medical issues.

The Birmingham just replaces the coating of the ball at the top of the femur, with options in material, I had 'steel on steel' for toughness but options are ceramic (low friction but brittle) and plastic (easily replaced but wears quickly).

Having my hip replaced is one of the best ops I've ever had (and I've had 35), no pain, the only draw-back is slightly less range of movement.

I had mine done by a guy called 'Jim Kiellerup' at Latrobe Medical in Bundoora; he has done my last 6 operations (knees & shoulders), he is fantastic (and no out-of-pocket!)

My dear Mum fell last weekend and broke her hip, the poor love is ridden with reuhmatiod arthritis and is the bravest person i know . My mum deals with pain on a daily basis and never complians and she told me pain of breaking her hip (broke the ball off the top of the femur ) was like none she has ever experinced .
 
This week she has had a hip replacement the type Johnny O describes above as old school and is on the road to recovery . She said that apart from a little post op discomfort there is no pain from the op and they have had her up on a walking frame .
Shes hoping to be home early next week and is looking forward to having her 3 boys in the same country as her for the first time in 25 yrs in August .

I wish your old mum all the best Bill, hopefully she'll be almost new once they fix her hip. My old mum had a tumble herself last week, ironically she fell while getting on to the courtesy bus taking her to her weekly exercise class . She took a great old chunk out of her shin and being 93 years old she doesn't heal all that well. I'm now find myself taking her to the skin clinic at the hospital for daily dressing changes so progress in the shed's now on hold ......again. I'm not complaining though, it's what we should be doing for our parents when they're old.

Hope you guys have a better run with your mums, I'm lucky I have a couple of younger sisters to do the caring side of things so I don't neglect the workshop ;-)

Geez Bill and Mark, I hope your mums get better soon. It's amazing what they can do in the hospitals now, John, I know everyone's different but to be riding/racing after 6 weeks is amazing.....do the doctors agree with that or are you just doing it?.....I smashed my left pelvis about 2 months ago as well as a few other things and the Doc's have said it will be 12 months recovery. I'm hoping around at the moment on crutches and hopefully getting rid of them in a few weeks....there a pain in the arse so to speak. I have a few mates who have had hip replacements and they all agree it's a new lease on life afterwards so good luck to you and 2 shocks.

Thanks everyone for the positive responses. This has given us a lift considering we are having a trying time with the pain and that includes giving me, Mrs Maico the pips  I reckon I should be going for a Carers Pension

Hey Mrs Maico, my wife has been playing nurse for the last 4 weeks since I have been home....she's come close to killing me a few times but the end is near....there's nothing worse than a dirtbiker that cant ride so hopefully the OP  happens soon and life gets back to normal.
