How to tell KTM models
« on: July 16, 2013, 08:36:20 pm »
Can someone tell how to tell what year KTMs are.

I have tracked down a KTM MC5 400.

The numbers are

Frame No:-  55003260

Eng No :- 6-5504039  does the 6 mean it is a 76 model or does it just mean it is manufactured in 1976 and could be a 1977 model.

I had a KTM 400 in 1977 I raced it for the 1st part of the year but through circumstances I finished the year on a Maico 400.

Why did I buy a KTM? My initials are KTM.

Also what parts are available and where is the best place to get them.

Not sure about the numbers in terms of build dates on your bike but there are a few great places for parts..the best one in my opinion is in the US....his knowledge on this bikes is amazing....I race a 77 78 KTm MC 5 250 and its the best bike on the track in most events...I race the same bike in MX and hare scrambles. Below are the only two p,aces you need to care for your KTM..

   well

the Engine Number of 6 5504039

                   the 6 = 1976

the 550 is the engine famly and it 550 = 400cc

the 4039 = just your engine number

and your frame should be a MC5  with a ovel down tube where the shocks bolt on

And Please forgive me as I cant Spell for Shit ...

Thanks

What are the differences between 76 and 77.  Also the front forks appear to be Marzocchi.

Also would a 1974 250 motor fit straight in the frame.

I have a photo of my KTM 400 in 1977 I will try to find it and post it.

74 Motor will bolt directly in.
A 76 MC frame is perfect for OZ pre 78 as the 77 MC needs the suspension shorten to 9 inch.
Al Buer is good for parts and bikebuzzard on ebay plus the mentioned websites. KTM 400 parts fit all 400 models thou the years. DC make new plastic and you get new tanks from Clarke. If you need a custom pipe made for KTM's the D Lewis can help. He made the one on this bike below.
