The 1980 models are not that desirable and don't sell for near as much as the 81 490.
That is a nice one though with lots of trick bits..

Here we go again with yet another exercise in creative writing. It's disgraceful to think that someone out there might just believe this bullshit.
Quote
THIS 1980 440MC MAICO IS ONE OF ONLY A HANDFUL OF RACE BIKES THAT WERE MADE BY WHEELSMITH RACING BACK IN THE DAY
Cutaway fins, an alloy swingarm and a couple of stickers doesn't make it a genuine Wheelsmith. I'd want to see some solid proof that the bike is a genuine bike instead of an over blinged Bill Eyler replica. Why is it that every second Maico that comes up seems to have been through the hallowed Orange County Wheelsmith shop. I have a string of genuine Wheelsmith parts on both of my Maicos, personally bought by me at the shop from Greg Smith himself back in the day but there's no way I'd ever, ever describe them as Wheelsmith Maicos.
Quote
MAICO WON A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE 440 IN 1980 AND THIS BIKE IS AS CLOSE AS IT GETS TO A FACTORY WORKS BIKE
Lets get something straight....Maico never won a World Championship in 1980 or any other year. The closest they came was a couple of second places in the early seventies and in 1957 when Fritz Betzelbacher won the European 250 Championship, the year before the 250 class got World title status. As far as the bike being "as close as it gets to a factory works bike", The factory team used almost stock bikes in Europe, no alloy swingarms, no cutaway fins, no billet nonsense, no Works Performance shocks....they used Corte-Cossos, Ohlins and Bilstiens in 1980...in short the bikes were, with the exception of some individual porting and tuning, stock as a flucking rock.

What we have here is a nicely, if overdone 1980 440 Maico, a model as Johnny O rightly described as " not that desirable and don't sell for near as much as the 81 490". A thousand dollars worth of billet bling does not maketh a 'factory works bike'. ::)

Firko, How did I over bling this bike? It came to my shop a few years back and I rebuilt the engine?
WTF???

Just my opinion Bill, I'm a believer in truth in advertising. It's so long ago I can hardly remember the situation ::)

Firko, I agree. If I had to guess, it was a bike either from wheelsmith shop or all parts there.
Have real Thor swingarm, Dated Rims with Wheeelsmith wrap spokes. Drilled and cut cylinder exactly like few real wheelsmith cylinders, old wheelsmith tank decals, ti bolts etc.The rear brake pedal is from a modern Honda I suppose.
Bike looked never to be restored.. Just my opinion. Owner emailed me yesterday about it..
I had it here to rebuild motor for the owner in Pennsylvania who has since sold it..  Take care
Bill

What pissed me off Bill was this little sentence.......("MAICO WON A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE 440 IN 1980 AND THIS BIKE IS AS CLOSE AS IT GETS TO A FACTORY WORKS BIKE.") As I said in my rant, it's nothing like a 'factory works bike' and to say something as outrageous as Maico winning a world title in 1980 screwed my bullshit detector off the dial. When I read my post back it does look as if I'm criticizing your restos Bill but that wasn't the intention. I was just sprouting my opinion that every 80's Maico that seems to come up is blinged up to high heaven with billet stuff never available back in the day. It's getting to be that a bog stock 490 Maico is the rare exception ::). If ever a bike didn't need an alloy swingarm it's the 78-81 Maicos. These bikes are great straight out of the box (OK, the 80 model could do with a little help). I love a bit of bling and shine myself but this fixation with Christmas Tree Maicos* drives me a little batty.

* My mate that owns my old bog stock 490 Maico calls the bling bikes Christmas Trees.
