VG 360 1977 Oil Levels?
« on: April 25, 2013, 07:49:02 pm »
Hi guys I'm riding a 81 VG250 with a 1977 VG360 engine in it this weekend and don't no anything about this brand of bike can someone tell about the separate oils in the gearbox and the crank case, the left hand case has 300ml stamped on it but there is nothing on the right one, can anyone tell how much goes in the side?

This is the first Monty I've ridden and what a gem, much nicer to ride than my CR 250 79 Honda....

Clutch has 300ml of standard old basic ATF (not the new flash stuff) made for the old borg warner boxes. Gearbox uses 500ml of 80 gearoil.

I assume you mean a '77 4 speed VB360 engine which are a great engine.

I run 25:1 Castrol TTS in 98 Caltex never have a problem That is the recommended ratio by Montesa. I would say any high quality oil would be OK. Motul 800 would probably need less oil but never ran it so can not say.

I can tell you from experience, that ATF will ruin the clutch plates.

Hi Jared, I have always run ATF but never the new stuff with anti-wear additives was recommended to me back in the ‘70s by Barry Ryan the state distributor. I could imagine that the newer type ATF could cause problems. The recommended oil is SAE30 but I always found that the clutch drags really badly. All my bikes still have the metal to metal clutch plates is that the type of plates you are talking about?

Hi guys, mate did what you said, ran ATF in the clutch, it did drag a little but no slippage, also ran 80-90 gear oil in the other, the bike ran sweet all day, I even managed to get a win on the old girl, 1-3-5 placings gave me the win overall in the EVO Open class for the day so I'm happy as a pig ;D, had to ride the Monty straight after getting off a VMC CR500 sidecar so didn't make riding the girl easy but was fun just the same....

Anyway thanks for your help...

See what I can do, I'm not switched with the computer, might have to email them to someone and they put em up for me.....

If you look on VMXSHOTZ.COM the event should be on there. The Monty is No52 Round 1 BMCC.
