1973 fork internals - which bit where?
« on: June 11, 2013, 04:41:31 pm »
Gents, about to put the forks on the project back together.

Can someone help with the order in which the internals go together on the damper rod.

At present I have the bronze bush with the step facing down towards the allen head fastening bolt.

Then a 17mm Circlip

Then a 40 to 50mm long spring

Then a valve type of washer that has a number of small holes drilled around it. On one side it has a wave spring washery thing attached to it. That is now against the spring.

The other side has a bit of a mm or so step in it.  Next is a alloy bush which is about 8 to 10mm wide - it seems to fit nicely into the step of the valve washer.

Last is the alloy bush which is around 60mm long and has a step at one end presumably to house the 10mm wide washer.

Question is - is the is right way?

Many thanks.

This might help.

Plain dampening rod in hand
brass bushing w/circlip keeper
top out spring
washer/spring valve, wavy spring towards the bottom
aluminum spacer
long aluminum bushing, deep hollow side down

Press the aluminum bushing, with the appropriate hammer & socket combo, into
the fork leg. You can freeze the aluminum bushing if you want to make it
easier to press in. It's not a difficult press, but it is snug. You are
assembling this as a unit so don't send the dampening rod out the other end
of the bushing or you will have to start again. Don't forget the circlip
that goes in the bottom of the fork leg to keep this whole assembly in the
forks.

VMX 60,

As a result of your info I have turned that valve washer around so the wavey spring is now up against the small alloy spacer.

Makes sense now too.

Thanks so much for the info.

Have both alloy bushings in the freeze to make it a bit easier for that press fit.

Kind regards
