YZ465G Fork Questions

I've bought a 465 that has a set of forks fitted that I can't identify. Now I don't have a piccy, but I can tell you that the axle clamp on the right hand leg is a block that gets clamped to the leg using 4 studs sticking out of the leg itself. Guy I bought it off reckons that they're YZ legs and that he fitted YZ parts into them when he serviced them, they don't however match the parts manual, which shows the clamp being part of the lower leg casting that clamps with 2 bolts. What's made me very curious is that there's a set of forks on epay at the moment that are indentical to mine and advertised as YZ ones. I've searched through the yamaha parts sheets on bike bandit, and curiosity is killing me. Can anyone have a guess at what they are off?

Are they 43mm, I've got the same setup that came with a YZ125N.

Good question, I've never measured them because I assumed they'd just be the stock size. That's 38mm for a G isn't it?.

Sounds like later model bits.

38mm = 125 before 1984, 43mm = 250/465/84 125.

If the brake lug is horizontal, that's also a give-away that they're later forks.

Overall length is also a big clue - the G and H forks are really long, and are designed to have ~60mm sticking out of the top triple clamp.

The 43mm 125 bits are easily identified, as they are machined down between the triple clamps (in the same way a YZ250A or YZ125C is). And they've gone back to the angled (not horizontal) brake lug.

the brake lug is at an angle and from what I can see the front wheel is a spaced IT one with the quick pull axle. but even the IT forks don't have a clamp like this one.

The YZ125G-k 1980 to 83 model are 38mm, 4 stud clamp with a 45deg brake lug.

nice work we have a positive id. thanks djracing. I didn't even think about seeing if they were yz125, I just looked at 250 and above YZ's and IT's. The guy I bought the bike off said he replaced the fork springs (because they were sacked out, surprise, surprise) and I've just replaced the 10wt oil he put in with 15wt, would the valving be similar between the 125G and the 250/465G? ie. am I going to get away with keeping these forks as they are with heavier oil, or should I be on the lookout for a set from a 250/465G?

Pretty sure YZ125G fork are 36mm, FWIW.

With the right springs and oil, the 125 forks will work fine.

Thanks Nathan, I'll give them a go tomorrow and see how they feel with the heavier oil.
