Looks like a good one but a lot of coin.. Another 490 with a mikuni on it, they don't start any easier and they actually make less power than the bing.

Seeing a Mikuni on a piston port Maico often shows that the background of its owner/builder is with Japanese bikes. They see the old Bing leaking away, hate its spasmodic idle and think that the carby must be rooted and replace it with a shiny new Mikuni. Unfortunately all they achieve is getting a Maico that idles at the expense of horsepower all through the range. Mikuni's are also very jetting sensitive but a Bing runs just fine with ball park jetting. I've used Del Orto, Mikuni and Lectron carbs on Maicos of all eras over the years and alway went back to a Bing. Now I don't bother with anything else and I have plans of experimenting with a 38mm Bing on my Cheney's piston port 360 RT1 motor. A quick scan of the pits will show that the long tern, old school Maico owners nearly all use Bings. Mick Hockley was the only (winning) Maico racer that I can recall that used Mikunis on his pre 75 Maico tackle. It's a slightly different case on reed valve Maicos where the Mikuni works quite well but even then it's no better than the original equipment Bing.

Slightly off subject,  I was given a brand new 36mm Bing 54 carb off a Jawa speedway bike the other day. Jawa used them for one year in 75 or 76 but the speedway guys often retro fitted Amals and tossed the Bings. Their loss is my gain, I've got three of these carbs now, they're exactly the same model as was fitted to Maicos and Husky's except of course for the methanol jetting. When I ran my 250 Maico (the purple wheeled thing) on meth I used a speedway Bing with standard Jawa jetting, needle and slide and it was a flucking rocket as Peter Lee and Grasy might remember from the 90's.

It's the real deal, know where the bike came from & the owner/restorer. Heaps more spent than his reserve. We discussed the Bing V Mikuni thing this morning actually, I would stick with a Bing personally.  Not sure he'll get his price in todays market though, hope he does though.

He claims that it has a Wheelsmith head and cylinder.
Always thought Wheelsmith cylinders had a reed valve ??

I don't think reed valves were a big thing with Wheelsmith, can't say I've seen many reed cylinders in the US but who knows what is genuine Wheelsmith.
