Airbox Ideas for DT/RT 1
« on: December 09, 2012, 11:18:55 am »
I'm looking for help with making some type of airbox for my RT-1 project.  It currently runs a Uni-filter pod in an open area.  When we put on the RT-1MX cylinder and head we notice some dirt in the lower end, so I need better protection for the filter.

Anyone have a setup I can copy or some good ideas?  Thanks!  :)

Thanks Iainyz,

I have one of those that I'm gonna use when I put together my RT-2MX project someday.  I'm looking for something that will take a little bit bigger filter. The two sides are already covered, so I was thinking about something like those aftermarket ones for the 73-74 Elsinore.  They were triangle shaped metal on the front and folded under to give a bottom.

 ;)

Jay, like you I originally ran a Unifilter out in the breeze on the old DT1 from Hell but it was letting a lot of gunk through. After trying a few different options I eventually came accross a 2 litre (2 quart) Tupperware container at the Salvation Army thrift store. I cut a big enough hole in the base to take the Uni filter flange, and drilled the shit out of the lid and a number of random  3/8 holes in the main body so the uni-fliter can breath but not let too much dirt in. The tupperware airbox worked a treat but for some now forgotten reason I eventually replaced it with a hacked up MX250 item whick looked cobby as shit.

The clip lid makes access easy and if you're worried about it coming off, a twirl of duct tape will secure it. you might need a couple of  clamps like below to afix it to the frame, stopping it wobbling about. You could also use a quart ice cream container or similar vessel. Let your head go in the thrift shop tupperware section!

Jay, another good idea is a Webco remote filter system. Here's one for sale at the bottom of the post down below. That one hasn't got the side mount as shown in the cycle guide bike but a fabricated bracket and a piece of radiator hose or an MX250 style carb-airbox rubber as on the one that came with my Hindall will work. The beauty of this airbox/filter is that it's so period perfect it cries "How cool am I? " to the adoring, pitside throng 8). Marc Biro has advertised them to suit AT1/CT1 on Marks Swapmeet from time to time.

Does this unit use a commonly available filter?

Unifilter would have something that'd fit Red.

On the TM400 I used 2004 RM85 airfilter assembly, took off the rubber RM85 inlet boot and mounted the filter cage to flat plate with hole in it and welded spigot on the front face  to take the standard RM250 air inlet rubber open end, then stuffed it all inside RH airbox
