It looks low hour and there is a brake pedal for an 96 on ebay U.S. at the moment that should fit.  Although he could sell it easier if he made the effort to get some jets and fire it up.   They're starting to get desirable in the U.S.

You see a lot of them for sale less motor because the flat track blokes grab 'em for the superb Rotax motor.

It wouldn't be too hard to fit a XT/TT 500/550/600 XR500/600 motor into them.

Yeah, but the BM one is water cooled so you will have to fit radiators then find a new tank that will fit etc.  Air cooled motors would slide right in and keep the original styling and would be a cheap fix.  I know it's  a step back but if you find a cheap roller the chances are you wont find a cheap Rotax motor.

The 406 frame will take any Rotax air cooled two stroke motor, but if you can't find one be just as easy to stick any 2 banger in there.  The ATK frames were built by C&J so you can put together a pretty neat frankenbike.  Where else would you find a C&J frame for $127.11

How does the right side countershaft sprocket affect things?
The swingarm would definitely be different, what about the frame?

If you've never seen an ATK frame, do yourself a favour and chase one down for a squiz......these things are as trick as Bridgette Bardot's bikini and almost as light. For $127.11 + $57.11 for the WP USD forks (that'll obviously need a rebuild/chrome job) yoy've got a great start to a very trick Frankenbike.....it'd be cool with an aircooled Evo eligible motor like a 465 Yamaha or 500 Husky.

Here's an ATK transplanted with XR500 power. I realise they're different bikes but the engineless one also received an XR500 motor.

Or how about an ATK with a Harley Evo motor? Not really my cup of java but I give him points for making the effort.

Now you've got me thinking, hopefully I'll think for too long and it will be gone ;)   Why do all the prices end in $7.11???

Obviously a husky engine would be easier with its right side drive, wouldn't have to swap shock mount etc

Would it be evo eligible with say yamaha drum brake front end given that the frame is not off a evo eligible bike??

Early ATK's were fitted with Honda XR motors, or you could buy just the frame kit from ATK to transform your XR.  Honda stopped supplying motors to ATK and that's when Horst went to the Rotax motor.

So the one in the picture is an actual ATK/Honda.

As for the Sportster, the builder saw a movie with a Sportster dirtbike in it.  He tracked down the builder and found the frame was a one off C&J.  He contacted C&J and they had a spare prototype frame lying around so he bought it.  As it was the prototype it lacked somewhat and he had to re engineer it.  If you google 'Baja Harley' you will find some info on it.

The reason it looks ATKish is because I'm guessing he styled the tank off one. I'm guessing this because I purchased an ATK tank from him which I assumed was his original plan to run.

On the ATK's the forks are the same as the early LC4 KTM forks and you can source them here for around $100/150.  But you could probably fit any forks, I would be more concerned about the the rear shock as the top eye runs in line with the reservoir so it doesn't foul the riders leg.  Most rear linkage shocks have the reservoir offset to the top eye and will hang out the side or interfere with the airbox.  Might not be an issue on a frankenbike though, but something to keep in mind.

The countershaft brake doesn't affect the frame or swingarm, some people have retrofitted back to rear disc after having issues with the countershaft brake.

I have noticed the Yanks tend to break bikes up if they're slow to sell.  One of the ATK forum members had a very tidy 260LQ that he had spent a bit of money on and used it as his regular ride. The next thing I know he's parting out the bike rather than selling it whole.

Here's pictures of all the ATK models that were built when Horst owned the factory.  From 94 on they where built in Utah and Frank White owned the factory.

Just out of interest they are selling new 605 Rotax motors for $4,295 plus shipping.  Should give a price index for what an ATK 4 stroke is worth.
