Has anyone ever seen a big tank fitted to the 84 KX500? Did anyone make such a beast or even modify something else to suit?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

short answer is no i have not, but big tanks from IMS & Clarke were available in that era, I have a 14.5 litre tank IMS for a 85/86 CR125/25/500 in the shed that i used for long trail rides and desert racing.

Thanks fellas.
It looks like it's going to be a case of modifying something else to suit, but I'd still like to know if anyone made something for that model.

I remember watching old Finke desert races from 84 and every bike had a big tank.

All the photos I can remember seeing, showed bikes with generic aftermarket tanks.
KDX200C/D might work, depending on how big it needs to be?
Clarke do generic tanks for air-cooled bikes, FWIW.

Thanks fellas. It looks like a generic tank might be the only option unless I get a custom alloy one made like I did in the 80's so I can use the stock seat.
That cost me 800 bucks back then though.
