Very Interesting Bikes

Dropped in to see Graeme Boyd (an old fellow Montesa rider from back in the 70s ) and as we all know an avid collector of all things VMX .

He allowed me to have a look at several of his bikes he happened to have lying around!

His RH67 is just magnificent and so interesting to spend 30 – 40 minutes pawing over super .

The ‘Rahier’ RM125 Suzuki from ’76 – Factory swing-arm, and front end Mmmmmmmmmmmm

A ‘DG’ RM125B from ’77 was nearby.

They made the two Husky ’67 bolt up frames jobs look downright run of the mill

He also has a fully house Yoshi TL1000 dirt track bike lying round.

He has a lot of interesting bikes but they're all hidden away for god knows what reason? It's not like he's the only collector around..
A certain queenslander has the ultimate collection of Works motocrossers and brings them out to show at most big vmx meetings.

Everytime I go to Graeme's shop he has something very interesting hanging around and will show anyone that asks.

The TL1000 dirt tracker was in the workshop when I was there some time ago.

My view on collectors is that they own em and can do what they want. Graeme at least seems to be a collector that does not over restore bikes leaving them with their original patina whenever possible.

He also has a confirmed engine, frame and some running gear from a RH71 or 72 ridden by Joel Robert  .

There's a story behind Boyds attempts to get this swingarm from me a few years ago. We couldn't come to terms on a deal so I swapped it with Mark Cotterill for a pair of Fox Airshox. Graeme went apeshit when he heard what I did and hasn't spoken to me since.  Boyd eventually got the swingarm but he had to buy Cotterills RM125 to get it. He's a very strange fella.

I went into Boyds shop years ago and he was rattling off all his bikes, I've got this and I've got that but I didn't see any of them. I've got a good collection of bikes too but couldn't get a word in...

Yeah Boydy's got some good stuff but I don't understand why he keeps it all so 'underground'. I know a number of serious collectors and nearly all of them are more than willing to bring therir bikes out to race meetings for display and one well known serious collector even lets friends and even some strangers cut laps on his exotica. Keeping the collection tucked away in cardboard boxes does nothing for the bikes or the sport as a whole.

   I know we can look at Glossy Photos but
   its more enjoyable to see them in the Flesh
   so to speak.

He sound like he is just a show off, sprouts about what he got, I have know time for people like that.

Dont know the bloke but people i know and whos opinion i value tell me hes a bit different  In one of the early VMX mags there was a article on him and it showed a lot of really cool bikes all stacked away in Suzuki delivery boxes 

Still at the end of the day there his bikes to do with as he chooses  just a pity such treasures are stuffed away like that

I know a few times Graeme(more his brother John) has taken a large collection of bikes up to Barleigh and let just about anyone ride them. The most I could ever get from him was a 'G'day' untill I bumped into him at the GP, was nice as pie to me, has been ever since. Think the uber unobtainium 'Pit lane' pass I had on might have had something to do with it
Whilst he can be a tad OTT I can't  knock him for stumping up $$ to run events and back racers(Casey Stoner being one of them), a friend who works there is also going through the collection restoring and fixing them to 'race ready' status. Many were in pretty bad nick, the RH67 landed here sans gearbox.

I can only comment how I have found him. He is always keen to discuss and if its at his shop show me what he has and how he came by it and what he had to do to it.

When I returned to bikes about 5 years ago I walked into his shop and he came out of his office greeted me and wanted to catch up on the last twenty five years or so.

Different! aren't we all? If I had a collection like his I would be reasonably careful until I was comfortable with the persons intent.

As far as displaying his bikes it seems just like a lot of other serious collectors they are dammed it they do and dammed if they don't
