Beamish Trials Bike
« on: August 31, 2012, 11:03:54 am »
Gday all,

I have been considering getting into the trials scene and would like to know if anyone out there has a Beamish for sale???

I dont know alot about trials riding, but being a Suzuki guy my options are a RL250 or the upgraded Beamish bikes.

Is there a cut off for different years in Trials competition???

Thanks

Tim

In Australia Post Classic (twin shock) trials has a pre1986 ( :-[ Oops Pre87 maybe) cut off and must be twin shock, drum, brake, air cooled.

Beamish Suzukis are a very rare bird even in the UK.

The RL engine is good and the frame geometry of the original bike can be fixed

Hi Tim the bike age cut-offs in MA open competition are December 1964 for Classic and December 1986 for Post-Classic (also called Twinshock). Some clubs have their own bike age cut-offs for club events. One example is that the Denman MC runs a pre-70 class in their club trials. There are moves to change Classic to pre-70 at Open events or to include a pre-70 class.
Not many Beamish Suzukis sitting around for sale in Australia. A bloke I ride with imported a 325 from the UK a few years ago and fixed it up a bit and it is very nice to ride. It's the one in the photos in VMX one of the years that CD was held at Conondale. There's also a bloke lives in the Barossa who is a Beamish lover and was sponsored by Suzuki riding Beamish bikes in Australian trials at the top level in the 1970s. I can PM you with contact details if you want.
Best bet if you are serious about getting a Beamish is to import one from the UK. They are priced very modestly over there and there are places who will sell them to international customers including arranging the packaging and transport.
Another thing is that with some frame mods, the RL becomes every bit as good to ride as the popular 1970s trials bikes, and still looks like an RL.

I'm currently looking to restore a RL250 I have squirreled away and would want to be using it for trials riding at club level and for having some fun on.  Having never ridden a trials bike before, let alone an RL250, I have absolutely no idea what constitutes a good or bad trials bike .. ahh ignorance is bliss  ;D

I have heard the RL's are slow turners so could you please point me in the direction of some info on these frame mods you allude to so I can do them before I restore the bike.

Thanks
Craig
