Removing Clear Contact

Sugestions Please,

The fuel tank of my '75 TL250 Honda has clear contact on it that looks like it was put on the tank way back in 1975 and has yellowed and cracked and basically looks like crap. The paint work under the comntact looks to be in quite good condition.

So, what method have been tried and found to be successful in geting the contact off with out damaging the paint beneath.

 ask your wife what they use to get adhesive dressings or the gummy residue off skin with as that might desolve the old contact glue,maybe metho but dont get it too damp coz it softens/remove paint,hot air gun but not too much heat,maybe ask panel beater how they get unwanted stripes off cars.good luck with it and report back what works out of that lot

Hi CJ, once you get the contact to budge or even lift an edge, there is a product Bunnings sells in the cleaning section called Oomph. It is citrus based and it is excellent at neutralizing the stickiest of gums. I had a commercial application where I needed to clean a machine covered in years of built up spray adhesive. We tested thinners, turps, metho and a couple of recommended dangerous chemicals, don't remember the names, along with a number of products off the shelf and off the shelf Oomph was the easy winner.

Eucalyptus oil works quite well.

Yep Eucalyptus oil is the go, if not I found that Kero does it but takes a bit a bit longer.
