my friend has just had the RM250 d I sold him on the dyno. It is standard apart from a 82 head.It put out 41 hp

not bad considering the guys that run the dyno said most modern 250s they put on standard are 34-38 hp!

He is going to fit a new aftermarket pipe and carb to it and take it back ( hope it isnt worse

)
Just goes to show the old bikes did have the grunt .

I think the power on the 250's from the 80's is far more usable than the last of the two strokes. My 250L has a very liniar power curve which allows it to hook up just about anywhere where as my 2000 is just an ARM-stretcher. My mate has an '88 CR 250 (he had an '05 YZ 250) and he reckons the same.

Unless it is European, thankfully KTM, Husky, GasGas, Berg etc havn't drunk the 4 stroke Koolaid and this year have focused on improving their 2 strokes.

I think the 250 2 strokes changed a lot in the late 80s when it was all about Supercross, I had YZ250S at the time and then changed to U which felt more like 500 with a lot of grunt down low for that immediate corner to corner punch that Supercross bikes need.

I can leave 250 4 strokes, they always have that... 'is that it' underwhelming feeling, 450 is different story.

In the UK lots of people are switching back to enduro 2 strokes. They can't afford to run the 4bangers

Mont, I assume Asasin in his first post was talking about 250 four bangers, as on average they make 36hp. But I do agree with you to some degree, you say the 80's bikes! I say it wasn't until the 1982 YZ250J, the 1st of the mighty power valve by Yamaha (YPVS) the engines became smoother more user friendly & tractable. I also agree that towards & around the years 2000 that some (not all) of the bikes were very powerful, explosive & harder to ride than the mid 80's bikes. In fact some of them were producing close to 50hp at that time. I have both YZ250 & KX250 2001 models. Both bikes are stock & all I can say is the KX screams it head off up top & is much harder to ride! The YZ has a much stronger bottom end & mid & is once again smoother much more tractable & user friendly.
