Sounds like the resistor you put in series with the regulator to power the lights and protect them from blowing from sudden current surges (missed gear change false neutral etc)

Looks like a diode to me.

Lozza is correct it is most likely a single diode (half wave) rectifier or possibly 4 diode bridge (full wave) rectifier. If the bike is wired as per the diagram then unless that white/red wire is connected then the battery will not charge.

The magneto produces AC voltage which varies its frequency with engine speed and also its voltage to a dregree. The rectifier changes that to DC for use in the lights and to charge the battery.

The battery acts as a regulator to a large degree which is why newer bikes without batteries have a large capacitor to smooth the rectified DC.

It is interesting that the fuse will only stop the battery from feeding a fault but the magneto / rectifier can continue to feed a fault in the wiring whenever the engine runs. Do they have problems with burning out magneto? If so that could be why.

Montynut is correct.  rectifier for the battery.

Mine is registered and the (tiny 2AH) battery does charge. Not heard  of issues with magneto burnout. The only issue one ever really encounters with the PE is blown bulbs due to bad earths.

pictured is the rectifier on my '79 PE175N

and below is the YUASA 6N2-2A-4 battery

The headlight and tail are on a separate circuit, as you can see in the diagram.
So yeah, they only work when the engine is running. All PE's regardless of location had these.

Australia specific extras via the battery are the stop light, blinkers and horn.
Note the front brake lever and foot both should be triggering the brake light.
The wiring for them is basically lifted from the TS185.
