Who knows, I may be somewhere in the crowd in that Irwindale video. I was living an hour away at the time and often drove out for a look. The track was a part of the famous Irwindale drag strip complex, sadly now an industrial park. You're right 87, it was a shit track but the racing there, Ascot, San Bernardino and the tiny 180 yard Costa Mesa was always tight and a lot of fun. What the Yanks lost in sheer talent they made up for with enthusiasm and show biz pizazz.
Sadly, I had to stop going to the California speedway meetings because fans kept confusing me for Bruce Penhall...it was a bloody nightmare fighting off the chicks
