Cheap shocks.
« on: October 25, 2011, 07:40:52 pm »
I'm after a cheap set of shocks for a mx 250, I need approx 330mm eye to eye with 4 inches of travel.

Prefer a set thats usable and rebuildable. I'm seeing how cheap I can do a pre '75 racer,so the cheaper the better.
What ya' got ?

Hey Evo,
See if you can find a set of Arnaco's on U.S. eBay.
I'm not sure if they're still that cheap, but I've bought 4 or 5 NOS sets in the past few years and the most I paid was about 70 bucks.
They're rebuildable, have damping adjustment and are period correct.  ;D

I've been wondering about the Chinese piggybacks for $99/pair that z50.com.au sells. They're very close to the right length and the spring rates are to suit adults, so I'm guessing they're pretty good for a pair of $100 shocks!?...
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

The arnacos are usually not listed as 'arnacos' Ive seen them many times and recognise them by the box but they are always called something with no brand name.

This is what I used...

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NOS-Yamaha-MX250-Performance-Racing-Shocks-MX360-SC500-/290620628024?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43aa56dc38
Those are Red Wing shocks and they're not too bad for the money. Basically a copy of early KYB shocks, i pulled some apart and put heavier oil in them for a customer.
I've seen plenty of NOS ones on ebay.

I brought a couple of pairs of shocks off them a while back, they looked very similar to XR75 ones,1 set is still in my parts stash & the other is on my deltek Rockhopper,so that makes it a bit hard to say if they are good or bad for vmx,but they seem like reasonable for the dough,& fairly well made, one thing i did note was that they seem to have a very stiff spring which i think is usually par for the course with cheap shocks :)
