Honda CR 250 1973 - 4th gears ???
« on: July 20, 2011, 09:22:37 am »
Gents on behalf of Sean # 43 from NSW Heaven - any ideas where he can get 4th gear/s for his CR 250. Chain came off during race at Lithgow on the weekend and made 4th gear split into 5 bits. Racing continued on the Honda - just a big gap between 3rd and 5th.

Thanks Pete

I've seen some on Ebay in the US but they are getting hard to find. He's brave to keep riding it.. bits of gears floating around could destroy the rest of the gearbox.

Mate I agree, but brave didn't enter my mind with Seano on this one. I have received some info from another member who has found some in the US - vary between $15 to $70.

That's sounds like pretty good value, the way those things eat 3rd and 4th gears the supply will dry up one day

Not wrong. I have got a fella in Texas chasing parts for us now. He has given us a bunch of part numbers to check. Now need a manual.

You need to get the '76 M2 gears, they are updated and stronger. Also you can change the shims around between the gears allowing them to engage further to prevent false neutrals.

I have an old mag which explains a common practise in USA to change the whole gearbox from an MT into CR. The article says the end result is a much more versatile bike for pretty much all conditions and a bike which will do 100+ mph for desert racing. I'd imagine MT gearboxes would be easier to source. The flip side also explains how to make an MT better by fitting CR clutch & other parts. It's pretty interesting and makes sense when you read it.
Cheers,
K
