Replacement plug caps

   Hey fella's ,i want to replace plug caps on both my 83'  250 (motoplat)and 430(sem) huskies  ,do they need any special requirements -eg non resistor, what does  2k and 10k mean -  resistor/non resistor ? also they have very thin lead's can you use screw in type caps on them succesfully, and what caps can you recommended -blue ngk maybe ? any help muchly apreciated  cheers

Non resistor type is required on both Motoplat and SEM. Screw on caps are what you should use. No recommendation but I have used el cheapos with good results  . The 430 plug cap is likely to be very close to the pipe so try to mount the pipe so its not touching the cap or melting the lead  . Cheers

  Yeah pez it is very close' , looking at the blue ngk caps in ballards catalog they have a knob on the front side which could be a problem(hitting pipe),or maybe i could just grind it off ! do you know what the 2k-10k means,which is non resistor? thanks

They are both resistor caps 2k = 2000 ohms and 10k = 10000 ohms. The 2k being the least resistance. If you are running a resistor plug ( plug with a R in the code) I wouldn't run a resistor cap. Non resistor caps getting hard to find.

    No, i run standard B8es style plugs, so what designation do  non resistor caps have if 2k is low resistance (0-k) ? Does lower or no resistance give stronger spark at plug ? also does anyone know if the lead screws out of coil end on the 83' red (motoplat )like it does on the 83' black (sem) bit scared to try without knowing first - could end up in tears :' if i were to replace leads what lead material is suitable or best ? cheers

Just get a basic MCS cap from your local bike shop - black rubber. They are cheap and cheerful.  They will stock them most likely. Just say non resistor - there will be no designation for kOhms for the non resistor models.  With Motoplats you don't want any resistance to the current flow - they struggle enough as it is 

The leads are bonded into the red Motoplat coils and cant be changed except by surgery. They don't screw or plug in unfortunately. I had Steve from Betta Bikes in SA replace one for me recently. $35 from memory - maybe more .  Get a decent length of lead put in and cut it to length once mounted on the bike. The finished job looks a bit manky due to digging out the epoxy to get to the core wire and then re-insulating it with epoxy. But its hidden away under the tank so cant bee seen.

Guys I have been using an NGK cap - L B E R  stock number 8307 - Red on my Motoplat KTM 250, Husky CR125, CR430 and XC 250. about $5 each.

No issues with hitting the pipe  a on the 430. Years ago I had one of those aftermarket black screw on caps and the pipe eventually wore a flat on it and then it arced out at high revs. Pesky problem to solve untill I started it in the dark one evening.

Kinda neither. You get a copper plate which has an arrow shaped pin on it, which is poked into the copper wire and wrapped around the end of the lead, to make a bit of a loop, then the lead, with the copper loop bit protruding is basically shoved up the end of the cap until it marries up with where the spark plug enters. Hope I'm making sense.

Worth every cent of the $5.00 just to learn the build technique. Once in place they seem to stick there good.
Bit more work than the bulky no name black rubber ones but, betta.

With the MCS caps they do a rubber one and a silicone one. Get the silicone one, they are better. NGK also do a range of univeral plug caps and there is a black 90 deg one with no resistor.

Have a Chinese one on both  my 240 and 400,s with no problems Husaberg.
Mine are water cooled so the exhaust goes nowhere near it.

Yeah all good.  The prob is mainly with the 250, 430 and 500 air cooled and how you adjust the pipe up on the spring mount under the tank. All the same frame with a taller and taller barrel. My 1981 CR 125 Husky has absolutly no issue, Same frame. Pi$$ie little motor.

But so far the $5 NGK are holding up really well and the red goes faster.
