Very sad, an inspiration to our Indigenous people but like a lot of retired Boxer's he became a bit of a lost soul.
Anyone remember the song he released?

That is sad RIP Lionel Rose.

Also read Seve Ballsateros passed away at 54 from cancer.

I think the song was "thank you for your smile"....i could be wrong.

I remember him coming to our school as a young fella where he impressed us all with his hand speed. His charting song was called "Thank you". He lived for many years @ Attawood/Greenvale in for what was at the time a fairly flash house. R.I.P. Lionel, you gave it your all.

YES that was it Roy and HG used to play it instead of Advance Australia Fair on their calls of footy games.

His other song was;" Pick me up on your way down ". I had the honour of meeting him and playing both songs with him. He was an inspiration to us all.God bless and rest in peace.paul.

Have a great memory of meeting him in about 1975 at New Calidonia (he was in the next room at the hotel) I remember him as humble of who he was and giving of his time to a couple of kids keen to check out the champ.
RIP Lionel - gone but not forgotten.

Was chatting to my Posty today about Lionel, he's a trainer about Lionels age and he told me a few stories about his brother fighting Lionel over 40 years ago.
I don't know if anyone realised the significance but the day Lionel died, tasmanian Daniel Geale picked up a world title in Germany.
Being a fellow aboriginal and winning a title as a big under dog on overseas soil is eerily similar to what Lionel did all those years ago.
I just hope Lionel was able to hear the news before he passed, with Geale being a polite guy who just goes about his business without fuss, Lionel would have loved his work
