What oil: what ratio?
« on: July 26, 2011, 08:12:47 pm »
A question for all you riders/racers of 1970's Huskies. What 2 stroke oil do you use and at what ratio?

I am asking because when I raced my 1978 390AMX back in the era, I ran Castrol R at 4% (25:1). I know two stoke oil has progressed a long way in the last 30 odd years, so I am interested in finding out what others run in the 1970's Huskies. Since getting the old girl up and running I have only put about 5L of fuel through it at it was 25:1 mix of premium unleaded with Castrol 2T oil, which was the only 2 stroke oil I had in the shed at the time excluding my stock of Castrol M.

CJ

P.S. I have never been a big fan of synthetic oils.
Why do things the easy way, when with a bit of effort you can really make it difficult for yourself!!

It's been well documented in these hallowed columns that it's not just smart, but also a power boost to get as rich a petroil mix through your two-stroke as possible, so even though you can run modern synth oil at 50:1 or more, I still poke oil through my old girl at 25:1. I use Motorex synth though.
In saying that, the tank stickers on those old Huskies say vege oil, so you'll find plenty of hard-core vets still using Castrol R and the like : I say, good on 'em, 'cos we get to share THE SMELL.... :P and the engines still come apart looking nice and sticky inside.
Tip the can, son... ;)
Nostalgia's not what it used to be....

Not a big fan of Castrol R30, stains everything it touches and has alot of carbon build up, tried Maxima 927 about two years ago and it's a much easier castor oil to live with. 40:1...watercooled motors.

I`m also using Maxima 927 at 30 : 1   in a YZ 125, YZ 465 and KX 500   ...even smells the same as the old Castrol R

I have a 74 125 a 74 250 and a bitza pre 75 400 ish...all run on Motorex 2T (full synth) at 40:1......it is so easy too.... 500 cc in 20L of fuel....run the best local fuel ..if that is premium unleaded 95 or 98 ...doesn't seem to make any difference...bikes all go like the clappers and pistons last a long time ....plenty of oil around when they do get pulled down...
