« on: April 17, 2011, 02:41:03 pm »
hi all can some one shed some light on timing this lovely machine ::). It has a bosch ignition coil lighting all new great spark set it up at 2.3 mm btdc but where does that brass pointer point to on fly wheel there is no marking on it the pointer u can see thru flywheel window. If i dont get it right soon my anle will be broken or it will break kicker shaft from kicking back cheers chris

Going through the same thing with my 400 wr.
Mark the flywheel and c/case with some white paint at 2.3mm btdc.
Then wack a timing light on it and give her a spin.
Battery powered light is the best for this.
Move the stator until the lines match and hope.
Ps.
When my foot gets better and I,me no longer afraid of the thing I might give her another kick.
Good luck.

Na Chris what I mean is for you to put your own marks on the flywheel and c/case.
Just turn your motor to 2.3mm btdc and make your own marks.
Put one on the case near the flywheel and one on the outside of  flywheel.{ Both lined up of course}                  Use white paint.
Then spin her with the timing light hooked up.
You should then see where it is firing. It will probably be well out .
Now move the backing plate around until the marks line up and you should be close.
Then get someone else to kick it, I did :)
Later on you can mark the stator at the little pointy thing in the hole.
Someone has been at mine, sanded the original off, and put the new mark in the wrong place.
Ps. The 400 got me 3 times last week and I can nearly walk again now. :)

Should explain myself better Chris.
When you spin it over have the spark plug out and resting on the cylinder away from the plug hole for safety. With the timing light connected to the ht lead.
Kick her over.
It will spin fast enough to see the flash on the paint marks.
This method I am trying to explain is reverse engineering.
You already have the 2.3mm btdc and you have a spark now all you need is the marks in the right place.
Cheers Mike

yep will try that thanks but have had another look and found mark on out side of flywheel so at 2.3btdc its at the 1.30 clock position but the brass pointer on stator is at 11oclock position is it possible to be out this far and run. Do u think they the yanks  ::) have mounted stator in wrong position if i take it off might be able to turn it to next mounting holes from 11oclock position to line brass pointer up with line on flywheel hope this makes sense chris

made a quick phone call to paul at stacker motorcyles melb to see if he can tell me why bike still kicks back after checking timing with t/light and he said no way u can run a bosch lighting kit ignition at 2.3btdc unless u want a broken foot . The solution is to set at 1.9 btdc with a little mod to stator base by more slot in 2 holes and yes the man new what he was talking about no kickback     ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D and starts second kick every time . So it pays to ask around so thanks to STACKER MOTORCYLES PHONE 03 9459 9535 ps my foots vey happy thanks chris
