XL250S Crank '81
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:35:57 pm »
The crank assembly on these XL's had a type of rubbish accumulation device built in to the crank by way of a pressed steel plate in one web of the crank. I think the idea is when the oil goes in through the end of the crank centrifical force sends any grit and contaminents outwards and there it stays, that is of course until it gets full over time.
Does anyone know the best way to clean this out or is the only way to press the crank apart and get at it that way?
Another question, once the crank is apart, is it necessary to keep this plate in place assuming it's only there to help keep the oil free of contaminents between long periods of oil changes and minimal maintenance?

Some advice on what other steps if any need taken if the pressed plate is permanently removed.
