TM 400 Suzuki Trick Bits
« on: October 18, 2010, 12:14:02 pm »
Here's something that doesn't come along very often. These things supposedly soften the infamous 'big hit' of the TM400 by adding a bit of flywheel weight. My TM400 is fitted with one and there was another lighter one in the 'box'o'bits I got with it. If I didn't already have them I'd be going for this little bit of 70's trick gear.

isn't that ironic Firko, was just talking with Ray this morning and the Cheney TM400 has decided to play the 'I don't want to spark anymore for no apparent reason' game :-\ seems it has PE175 ignition and cdi but alas it also now seems Ray is going to fit the stock ignition which incidently has one of these very weights already attached. Be interesting to try both the original ignition, a TS400 flywheel/cdi and the PE flywheel/cdi just to feel the actual seat if the pants difference. Would answer a nagging question I've had for a long time simply being, which one works the best ;D

More irony Doc is that both Rays Cheney and my Boyd and Stelling TM400 once lived in Bob Neilson's Las Vegas shed!
I'll send him off an email but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he built both engines....hence both having the flywheel weights.
I'll be starting to experiment with my TM soon and one of the things we intend to fiddle with is using different ignitions and different flywheel weights. I'm not sure what weight's on it right now but I'll weigh it and the spare eventually. I'll also try the PE400 and TS points ignitions I've got. I may still buy the weights above as I've got a spare round crank TS engine I'm going to really experiment with down the track.

coincidence eh ;) just on a side note Mark, none on the TS's had points excepting the 125/100/75/50 pre '78 and the '69/'70 TS250. I'm not sure the TS250 backing plate would fit. The TM250 stator was too small when I tried to do a swap onto the '69 TS250 hence I chased up that inner rotor kit ignition for it (still points ala cr250m style) . Pretty sure the TM400 uses much the same stator plate/coils as the TM250 which means the early TS250 points plate is more than likely a no go. Fortunately we've loads of options these days but as always it's finding the time to do these things ::)
