Building an ATK.

This is purely hypothetical - I'm way too poor to actually consider doing this at the moment (even if it was viable).

What's unique to ATK?
Forks/wheels are KTM.
Shock is same as KTM? Maybe some valving changes.
KTM rear wheel will work.
Is the seat the same as late 80s KTM?
Controls are generic.
Exhaust can be custom made.
Carby is generic.

Motor is Rotax - apart from CanAms (which are bloody rare in Australia), what else did they come in? Everyone talks about them as being common, but I can't see how...

So what does that leave?
Frame, swing arm, fuel tank, airbox.
Anything else?

Depends on which version you are building, earlier ones had relatively conventional frame but later versions had weird single side frame.

wheels on the later ones were Talon, -forks you can grab off KTM, shock off later KTM PDS maybe. Earlier ones enjoyed counter shaft rear brake and A Trac.

Part of what got me wondering was that I've got an '89 KTM125 wreck here..

The shocks are quite a bit different to the KTM ones which there are heaps of variations of anyway and theres also more than 1 ATK shock. Different top mount and lower mount is the major difference from KTM. I have the ATK valving specs if its important to you and i have some ATK specific parts if your interested.

you can probably use wheels, and suspension if you are not worried about what year correct you are building. Frame is different and swing arm steel.

The ATK stuff like A Trac and counter shaft brake you don't want anyway.

There will be one at the Harrisville meeting next weekend, l think mid 80s or there abouts........

I've been seriously considering looking at the one on eBay. But they're not quite old enough to excite me just yet.
But if I got it cheap enough...........  ;)

If you think about it Nate, they’re no different than a Can Am or a Kramit or HRD, or even an early TM.

The big 5 might build their own engines, but they have always purchased rims, suspension, controls and carbs from someone else.

Hell, I even know with certainty that most of the suspension innards are sub-subbed out to other companies than Showa, KYB etc. I can tell you that even Ohlins has over 100 sub manufacturers.

Production is about assembly, not necessarily pure manufacturing.

What ATK was – one guy with the dream and the BALLS to try something new? The end result may have been different that Soichiro’s but the intent was the same.
