TS250X help (esp wiring).
« on: January 09, 2011, 10:08:00 pm »
So I've just dragged home my new pride and joy  :P ...

The ad said "gearbox or clutch problem", but the more immediate drama is a complete lack of spark.
There's no battery (terminals just dangling in the breeze) and apparently some other stuff removed:

The ignition switch is still there, turned On but with no key.

Any help/advice/wiring diagram?

The other thing is the 17" rear wheel. Anyone know of an 18" on that fits - maybe from a DR or something?

The loose plan is to get road rego on it and use it as a trail bike, etc. Maybe a bit of a 'sleeper' - something that the average trailrider will dismiss as a poohbox but is actually fairly capable.
I've got a 43mm Honda front end and some other stuff to make it more dirt worthy - not sure if I can be bothered, though.

Finaly seen the light eh Nathan?
Is there a rec/reg on the bike?
That rim would be handy I have a 18 here but you would need spokes.

I have a wiring diagrame but i will have to scan it for you.

Also im pretty sure the battery does not affect ignition and they have AC ignition. Its only there for blinkers and other stuff. They have a 3 phase alternator.

I dunno about seeing the light, but I got it in my head that a balance shaft and electronic power valves were good things... This TS was about a quarter of the price of the Yamaha that comes with those features...

Reckon I'd be happy doing a rim swap - is your rim gold or silver?
Let me sus out the spoke situation. This one is 2.15x17, FWIW.

Leith, that would be great!

Silver unfortunately, big chance of it being 2.15 though. I reckon your on the right track it looks like a sub chamber resonator rather than a blade PV though. CMSNL show a rec/reg which means you will need the battery or a large capacitor (I can get those or one off a KDX/RMX/CRM/WR would suffice). Looks like the last of the short stroke 250's had no luck with a schematic. But there will be a black and red wire there than probably come from the rec/reg and or the cdi.

not a good photo but it may help if you close one eye and cover the other :P a battery isn't needed for spark but it (or something similar..lrg capacitor..not of the flux type) is needed for the exhaust valve to operate. Very doughy without ;)

I reckon provide everything in intact 12 V across the red and bl/wh wires and bridge the red and orange at the ignintion key if that's gone will see power to the coil. Could check for voltage across the Bl/red and G(?????) off the stator when kicked over.

Just looking at the wiring diagrame now and you dont need a battery for the bike to run as it has a magneto and even Doc said the power valve is cable acutated and doesnt have a electric solenoid so you dont even need a battery for that. But if you want to rego it then i guess you will want a battery for the blinkers and brake light though.

Believe it or not Bruce Bolton from Bolton Motorcycles in Kyneton campaigned modified TS250X'S in Vic enduros for some time in the 80's with a fair amount of success, so they can be made to work reasonably well if you are prepared to spend the time(or money).

I may have posted the wrong diagram Leith, nope it's there, beside the flasher unit. My powervalve is electrical, a single wire, no cables. Operated by a solenoid switch that is also quite visable in Nathan's photo as the cylindrical item bolted above the exhaust with the wire running to it ??? it does need power to work ;)

I believe one of these TSX's won it's class in the Finke desert rally of the day also. They can be made to fairly tear arse RM style if you so desire and cheap as chups ;)

Well the diagrame i was looking at must be a non power valve model or perhaps a TS125. Here is the correct one for Nathan showing the electronic valves so yes you will need a battery or a large electrolytic capacitor. Sorry about quality, tryed scanning a couple times but as the paper is thin the print shows up from the back. if you need bigger copy then email me.
In my manual there was 2 diagrames but the damn thing doesnt say what is what. Only difference i can see is one had a passign switch in the left switch block. I scanned the other diagrame too if you wanna see that.

Yeah sorry its so small, but this site re-sizes it.
