That's what I was thinking - kinda like the engine numbers on replacement XU-1 engine blocks.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

the shock resy mount is an indication its a 125 as the 500 had the ressy for the shock on the left side

It can't be a 125 or 250 it has no radiator mounts, they were all watercooled with the removable subframe. Has to be '83 or '84 air cooled big bore.
I also think it's a replacement frame with the part number stamp.

G'day Brad,

just saw this thread, i have an original 85' CR500RF frame in the shed (its your's  if you need it but it needs some work on bottom frame rails, footpeg mounts etc.) , i will take some pics for you to compare. i also bought a frame of US ebay some time back.

i will see if i can do this tonight as off for the day with Mini Hoony

here is my frame for comparison Brad

note the difference where CDI mounts (vertically behind head stem rather than horizontally abobe the coil )  also tank mounts are different ? the radiator mounts on mine, how does it compare to your 500RE & 480RD frames?

Thanks for doing that Hoony. Every thing says its an '84 500 frame. It looks like my 84 frame all but a few minor differences. At this stage I will call it a replacement frame due to the small differences and the weird frame number. John T had a good look on the weekend and its definitely factory numbers and not dodgyed up as the grain marks are in the metal (not ground back).
The two things that don't compute are that you wouldn't think there would be 2112 replacement frames built or special frames built either.
I might throw it on mxtrax to a wider audience.

Looks like an '84' an 83 would have the reservoir mount and chain roller bracket on the opposite sides to that frame

Yes rang an old school parts guy and even he had no answer.
It is an '84 but no solution to the frame number.
