DT1 IGNITION SYSTEM
« on: July 02, 2010, 09:32:07 pm »
G'day viewers I need some advice on my DT1 250 ignition system. I've spoke to blokes in the past but my head is a seive and can't keep information anyways I have a DT400 with a CDI system on it but if I use that the  bike is useless. I've bought a ignition system from the local wrecker off a early 80s YZ80 because I thought that was the way to go but how do I fit this system to the DT1  :-[   :-\   jimson
Just a balless freak having a go

where you say
I've bought a ignition system from the local wrecker off a early 80s YZ80
i'm guessing you've got the stator,flywheel & cdi box? from a YZ80. :o
i'd be looking for something with a little more flywheel weight {1550~ish grams=perfect} aiming for "torque" instead of revs.
early DT's, really are a good choice for the DT/RT1 motors as they bolt straight in.
if you proceed with the YZ80 set~up,
you'll need a lathe or someone that can drive one.
fit the stator plate first {you may need to machine up an adapter plate},
then you'll know what needs to be machined off the flywheel to make it fit.
it's a bit of rooting around but can be a heap cheaper than a PVL by comparison.
"flat bickie"

DT400 CDI onto DT1 race bike.
DT1 points onto DT400.
Problem solved.

Oh, and what Vandy said.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

I did my pre70 RT1 on the real cheap. and it doesn't show..Parts used- 12v alarm battery[the only part I bought], Old 12v car ign. coil, the small type fits under the tank in the original spot, condenser off who knows what,. I mounted the battery under the seat. the battery will easily do a full days racing. The spark would kill a black dog which makes it start easier and kicks back less, probably because of better flame travel. If I desired a charging system I'd get a coil of an old 6volt VW beetle and find a diode. I read in an old Clymer book once that 'for racing Yamaha motor cycles the ignition system is unsuitable as standard'.
dont follow me i'm probably off line!
